Believe it or not, I normally find Halloween an annoying time of the year (the wife and kids, however, have the entire house decorated all month and only rotate the decorations in time for Christmas). But this year I’m feeling generous, as I usually get when dealing with other people’s stuff, so let’s do a book giveaway. From the Hachette Book Group we have:
The Heretic’s Daughter By Kathleen Kent ISBN: 031602449X
Sins of the Flesh By Caridad Piñeiro ISBN: 0446543837
When Ghosts Speak By Mary Ann Winkowski ISBN: 044658133X
BoneMan’s Daughters By Ted Dekker ISBN: 1599951959
The Historian By Elizabeth Kostova ISBN: 0316070637
For the next two weeks–well, til Halloween–this blog post will be an open thread. Anyone leaving a comment here or on my Facebook cross post (or on my message board) will be considered entered into the giveaway. I’ll pick three winners–who will each get a complete package of the books–based on either random plucking or their ability to make me laugh. Sarcasm only increases the odds in your favor.
I’ll then get with them to get their shipping info so the publisher can send them their prize package. Please ONLY contestants who are US or Canadian residents. And no PO Boxes.
That’s it. Have at it!

I want a book! Wait? This is all I have to do. Awesome.
that's it. and it's not just one book: you'd get the whole set.
good luck!
Maurice Broaddus, all grown up and an author. Did you know back in high school that you wanted to write books? Pretty cool! I wish I could be that creative.
i knew i wanted to write since high school. didn't know i'd actually get there, though.
Ok, since I did not know if I had to post on this board or the Keenedom board I posted on both. Besides you know how some moderators will delete your message just so they can win. (Ok, that is my attempt at sarcasm. I am more of a "Brick-to-the-Face" kind of guy in my humor)
Thanks for the contest and chance to win.
the whole idea is awesome. thanks for the opportunity! how can you turn this down?
Wolfnoma=BANNED!!!!! J/K
All we have to do is post something?…well…here it it… something…
Hope that counts!
Tom Erb
Ooo! ooo! Free books! That's my favorite kind of book. Can't think of much to post, so instead of relying on my own creativity, I'll just give you a line from my five year old son, who, when given a free book at a bookstore promo, looked at the lady – in full seriousness – and said, "I love free books. They taste better."
Well, I must say! This is so not fair! A freebie contest? With sarcasm being an advantage? (It is, as far as I'm concerned!) Yet only open to North Americans? What? They can't even do sarcasm, not properly. Sigh. I am disappointed. (Yes, actually, I think I am – the books look quite good! And Hachette is a French publisher – another irony!) Maurice must realise that he has fans worldwide; he knows that I myself am not America-based. Yet in conjunction with an allied publishing company(?) he puts out discriminatory offers. Think more internationally, Maurice! I know it's hard for Yanks to grasp but.. The US and Canada are not the only countries in the world. Oh but .. perhaps I'm overreaching myself here – because to receive prizes, one obviously must be prepared to divulge RL contact details – and I'm not prepared to do so just yet! But – what is wrong with PO Boxes anyway? Haven't they been checked out by Homeland Security, and are you afraid of multiple entries by Al Qaeda? Or…
So did you get my "competition entry, " heh? I do think the fact that Hachette is a French publisher (least they were when I was at school; though they 're also international, I've read books with their label in German) and the draw is US/Can restricted, to be ironic. Agreed? Do you appreciate irony? And so, you don't much like Halloween and its attendant festivities. (Not even as a kid? Childhood US Halloweens must be worth a blog post. Do they celebrate it in the Caribbean?) Why no Mo love for Halloween? Bad associations? (Heh heh, potential story right there.) Or is it just a distaste for all the masks-and-costumes paraphernalia? Who doesn't love a good.. masquerade? Hmm? (*Lokean laughter*) But I did ask you, didn't I, whether you had childhood acting ability and got picked for school playlets like "Billy Goats Gruff". Guess I just got my answer. And this is one area where you and I differ! (I am unfortunately introverted, much less gregarious than you. But I can and will perform!)
i'm guessing the limits have more to do with packages being shipped via ups and the onerous cost of shipping overseas.
Yeah, I s'pose. (Were the limitations imposed by Hachette? When one buys from US Amazon, though, the amount charged for overseas posting doesn't seem that onerous. And how come Hachette are providing prizes on your blog when you haven't been published by them… or have you?) Still. Did you find my "entries" at all laugh-inducing or lip-curving? Say yes and that'll be my reward! (Ah, to be a fly on your wall when you receive half these silly things!) And what don't you like about Halloween, anyway? (Horror-writers' delight, in stories, anyway, isn't it?)
consider yourself rewarded.
I would love to have a new book or 5. Need some new reading material.

Sarcasm…? I normally come off pathetic when trying to be sarcastic. I'll save everyone the pain (and confusion) from any effort… LOL! Please accept this as my entry into this awesome contest! Thank you!

What? No candy? Pardon my sarcasm…I'd love to enter to win please.
I love Halloween, and I love books, 5 of them, that is. I've heard so much about a couple of these books and they're on my must read list. I really hope I'm lucky. My fingers are crossed.

this is a great giveaway, thanks for the chance
Sorry, I'm 9 months pregnant and have zero energy left for humor. :/

For me, I think sarcasm just happens. If someone is like "OK Jason, be sarcastic… now!", it just doesn't work. At least I don't think it does. However, when it does happen, it feels like a beautiful thing, and thus I'm supposing it looks like a beautiful thing. My wife and I at times banter back and forth while employing sarcasm, but again it seems as though it's a vein I have to somehow find myself in in order for it to blossom.
…
Wow. Apparently I felt the need to ramble in this comment. Rambling replaced sarcasm, I suppose. And apparently I like to frequently insert the italicize HTML tag, as well.
Thanks for the chance to win kind sir.

Oh, I have been wanting to read The Heretics Daughter so please enter me. Thanks

When Ghosts Speak of Maurice Broaddus they tell of his Sins Of The Flesh with The Heretics Daughter and The Boneman's Daughters. The Historians of the future will spread the word.

Huh? Why would you wanna laugh? If these books are supposed to be scary, it seems like you'd want comments that scare you.
Such as:
1) Panty-wearing monkeys
OR
2) Computer's running amok with water guns
OR
3) Rabid Rabbits Running 'Round Razing Railings
OR
4) Barbies decimating the earth with laser guns
Seeing as this is around Halloween time, these would seem more appropriate than making you laugh over cute little chipmunks doing the chicken dance or something like that.
Oh! If you want something to laugh at, here you go!
My email address! XD
shadeslayer25@gmail.com
Now *that's* something funny!
Hahahaha
Sorry I can't think of anything funny to tell you so…
"What… is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?
King Arthur: What do you mean? An African or European swallow?"
ScottyB153@Gmail.com
So basically it is either random or we have to be witty…
how about an Irishman walked out of a bar…
No seriously…it can happen.
Hey man, did you know you're a black author?
Thanks for entering me!
I'd really love to win these books. I can't wait to read The Heretics Daughter. walkerd@primus.ca
Oh! Please enter me.

I'm afraid I'm not sarcastic except when it just comes out haha so I'm not sure how to give myself an advantage in this contest.
*insert sarcastic remark here*
That should do it! Thank you!

This is such an amazing contest – thank you for the entry. I've been eyeing The Boneman's Daughters for a while now.
Selection by the ability to make you laugh? You probably don't want to select whoever pleads the most, so I won't try that. In the hope that you reward good behavior, I'm posting a link to this contest on my blog's sidebar

This is a great giveaway! And, I'm glad I finally found someone else who is not so fond of Halloween!!!!
I'm not that great at making people laugh – so, I'm hoping you decide to random pluck!
Thanks ~ megalon22{at}yahoo{dot}com
This is great, and I don't even have to put on a costume or scare anybody to get entered. Hope the books aren't to scary, or I might have to hide under the covers. But please enter me anyway. Thanks!

I would love to win this set.
Thanks for the giveaway.

Great contest! Thanks so much.
Finally! A blog where sarcasm is welcome. I'm going through the other blogs where people have won already and I'm disgusted. Obviously I haven't won. Such is life. Can't win 'um all, right?
Just because I really want to read HERETIC'S DAUGHTER doesn't mean I'll get it for free. Nothing in life is free! Reminds me of Pee Wee Herman saying "It's not like I wanted anything in return…but I didn't get anything in return!" Happy f****** Halloween.

Thanks for this great giveaway. Love these intriguing books.
I'm not feeling up to being sarcastic today, so put me in your random draw and I'll hope for the best.
These books look so good!
I'd love to win.
So today I dressed up as Wendy from the fast food Wendy's and then went and ordered a frosty at Wendys. Everyone loved it. I even held a sign that read "It's MUCH better than fast food, it's Wendy's."
